As I continue doing post production on The UFO Movie, I am posting a clip once a week or so to YouTube. A couple weeks ago I posted this one, consisting of a couple minutes from the segment exploring the quality of evidence supporting the famous Rendlesham Forest UFO case. (Spoiler: It’s shite. It’s nearly all fiction, invented by the TV shows; every time they make a new show about it, they add on new elements.)
Predictably, a comment appeared from a True Believer (defined, in this case, as someone who believes anything so long as it’s on TV). Now, I don’t encourage you to actually read this comment, as you probably have things to do this week, and you probably wish to preserve the integrity of your brain cells. But I will summarize. One of the fictional events added years later to the story was that one of the airmen touched a landed UFO in the forest. Another element added years after that was that in doing so, he received a telepathic code of ones and zeroes. It pertained to the location and placement of the Pyramids of Giza. Cue several paragraphs of numerology covering everything from the Golden Ratio to plate tectonics:
Now of course I didn’t read the whole thing, as I too have things to do this week. But I offer it as yet another example of proof by verbosity — the familiar fallacious arguing technique employing the strategy of giving so much information that no reasonable person could ever hope to respond to it all. These are typically filled with made-up information that, having no basis in the real world, no reasonable person has ever been exposed to before, or has had an opportunity to prepare a response to.
In later comments he challenged me to reply. Well, obviously, I won’t. I have no interest in studying this dribble drabble enough to figure out what’s wrong with it — and, notice, I’m just assuming that it’s wrong without having looked into it. Sometimes you need to do that just to save time. I’m working on projects that are actually useful to the world, and feeding this particular troll would not be useful for anyone.
Don’t feed the trolls… not even the delusional numerology trolls.
