Two indigenous men and a false narrative to explain them
Well, it's probably false (almost certainly) and we should be trying instead to get things right.
Thanks for reading my newsletter separating what’s true from what’s not in pop culture. Tuesday editions are free to all; paid subscribers get an additional Thursday edition as well.
Yesterday we noticed that the What’s Trending section of the Skeptoid website showed that our transcript page for the episode on Aurê and Aurá was at the top. These were two men, evidently from an uncontacted Amazon tribe, who came out of the jungle in 1987, speaking a language nobody could identify. My show telling their story was in July of last year, and they are generally a pretty obscure footnote in history — so it was surprising to see the page trending. Why would people be searching for information about these two men, and why now? Turns out there’s a good reason — unfortunately, it’s one that tells a tale that is almost certainly pseudohistory.
